Child Eye Care

Setting Your Child Up for Success

Eyes are our windows to the world, and just like us, they change and grow from the time we're little. That's why keeping a keen eye on our children's visual health right from the start is crucial.

For many children, vision is their primary learning tool until they are about 12, but they might not even know if they're seeing things differently from their peers. Unless your child has been complaining about headaches, tired eyes, or struggling with school tasks, it's easy to miss the signs.

Regular eye examinations can catch these signs early and make a real difference, not just to your child's vision but to their confidence, learning ability, and development.

When to Start

Recommended Eye Test Schedule for Children

Age 3

First Eye Examination

Even before school, we can identify vision problems that may affect development. A child's first eye examination is recommended around the age of three.

School Age

Every Two Years

Once at school, a check-up every two years should suffice for children not wearing glasses. Vision affects learning directly, so don't leave it unchecked.

With Glasses

Annual Check-Ups

Annual check-ups are recommended for any child already wearing prescription glasses or contact lenses to ensure their prescription stays accurate.

The Digital Age Challenge

Screens, Blue Light & Your Child's Eyes

Children today spend more time than ever in front of screens: tablets, phones, computers, and televisions. While technology enriches learning and entertainment, it comes with real consequences for young, developing eyes.

Extended screen use exposes children to blue light β€” high-energy visible light emitted by digital devices. Blue light affects the eyes' ability to focus, contributes to eye fatigue, and β€” most significantly β€” can interfere with the production of melatonin, disrupting your child's sleep quality and natural sleep cycles.

Poor sleep, in turn, affects mood, concentration, and academic performance, creating a cycle that many parents don't immediately connect back to screen exposure.

Our optometrists assess the impact of digital device use on your child's eyes and can recommend appropriate solutions: from blue-light filtering lenses and screen time guidance to myopia management strategies for children whose short-sightedness is worsening due to near-work demands.

Blue Light & Eye Strain

Digital screens emit blue light that causes the eyes to work harder to focus. This leads to digital eye strain: redness, dryness, blurred vision, and headaches after screen time.

😴

Blue Light & Sleep Disruption

Evening screen exposure suppresses melatonin production, making it harder for children to fall asleep and stay asleep. Quality sleep is critical for eye development and overall health.

πŸ“±

Myopia & Near-Work

Increased time spent on near-focus activities such as screens, reading, and devices is strongly linked to the rise in childhood myopia. Early management is key to protecting long-term vision.

Warning Signs

Signs Your Child May Have a Vision Problem

👀

Sitting Close to Screens

Sitting very close to the TV or leaning in at school is a classic sign of distance vision difficulty and should not be ignored.

🤔

Frequent Squinting

Squinting to see objects or the board at school suggests the eye is struggling to focus clearly, which is a tell-tale sign that an eye test is overdue.

😵

Headaches and Tired Eyes

If your child complains of headaches after reading or screen time, their eyes may be working overtime to compensate for a vision problem.

🎯

Poor Hand-Eye Coordination

Difficulty catching objects or clumsiness during play can sometimes be linked to underlying vision problems that have gone undetected.

The Examination

What Happens at a Children's Eye Examination

When it's time for your child's eye examination, our friendly optometrists will make the experience as comfortable and engaging as possible. You can expect the following during their appointment:

Assessing how their pupils react to light, which gives us vital information about their neurological visual function.

Checking how well they can track an object with their eyes, evaluating eye coordination and muscle control.

Evaluating the retina to assess the internal health of their eyes and check for any abnormalities.

Instead of a letter chart, younger children may be asked to identify shapes or symbols, making the test fun and accessible.

Our findings will indicate whether your child may need glasses, or whether further tests or follow-up consultations are required.
