Specialised Hard &
Scleral Contact Lenses

Custom-designed gas permeable and scleral lenses for patients with keratoconus, corneal irregularities, and complex prescriptions where conventional correction falls short.

"When standard lenses are not enough, a custom-designed solution can restore clarity that patients thought was no longer possible."

Advanced Contact Lens Fitting

Vision Where Others Stop

At Dynamic Vision East Rand Mall, we specialise in fitting advanced hard contact lenses, including Gas Permeable (GP/RGP) and Scleral lenses, for patients with complex vision conditions that cannot be adequately corrected with spectacles or standard soft contact lenses.

These custom-designed lenses are individually crafted to the precise shape of your cornea, providing optical clarity and comfort that off-the-shelf solutions simply cannot achieve. For many patients, specialised contact lenses represent the most significant improvement in vision quality they have ever experienced.

Our practitioners combine advanced diagnostic technology with specialist fitting techniques to achieve the best possible outcome for each patient, regardless of the complexity of the prescription or corneal condition.

Who We Help

Conditions We Treat with Specialised Lenses

Hard and scleral contact lenses are particularly effective for patients whose corneas are irregular, unstable, or too complex for conventional correction.

πŸ”¬

Keratoconus

A progressive condition in which the cornea thins and bulges into a cone shape. Keratoconus causes significant visual distortion that cannot be corrected with glasses or soft lenses. Scleral and RGP lenses are the most effective optical solution for most keratoconus patients.

πŸŒ€

Corneal Irregularities

Any condition where the corneal surface is uneven or distorted, including pellucid marginal degeneration, corneal ectasia, or irregular astigmatism, benefits from a rigid lens surface that creates a smooth, uniform optical interface over the cornea.

πŸ₯

Post-Corneal Surgery

Patients who have undergone refractive surgery (LASIK, PRK) and experienced irregular outcomes often find that custom hard lenses restore the visual quality they hoped to achieve through surgery.

πŸ’‰

Post-Corneal Transplant

Following a corneal graft, the transplanted cornea rarely heals perfectly flat. Residual irregularity is common, and scleral lenses are frequently the best option for achieving clear, comfortable vision after transplantation.

πŸ‘“

Failed Conventional Correction

If spectacles or soft contact lenses have been unable to deliver adequate vision correction, a specialised gas permeable or scleral lens assessment may reveal options that conventional practitioners have not explored.

πŸ“

High or Complex Prescriptions

Very high myopia, hyperopia, or irregular astigmatism can push the limits of what spectacle lenses or soft contacts can comfortably achieve. Hard contact lenses often provide sharper optics and better visual performance in these cases.

Diagnostic Technology

Medmont Corneal Topography

Precision Starts with Mapping Your Cornea

To ensure the highest level of diagnostic accuracy, we use the Medmont Corneal Topographer, one of the most advanced instruments available for mapping the corneal surface. This technology gives us a highly detailed, three-dimensional picture of your cornea that no standard eye chart or keratometer can provide.

This detailed corneal map is the foundation of every specialised lens design. Without it, fitting a custom hard lens is guesswork. With it, we can design a lens that fits your cornea precisely, maximising both comfort and optical clarity.

πŸ—ΊοΈ

Detailed Corneal Mapping

The topographer measures thousands of points across the corneal surface, producing a colour-coded elevation map that reveals curvature, irregularities, and asymmetry invisible to standard instruments.

πŸ”

Accurate Condition Diagnosis

Topography is the gold standard for diagnosing keratoconus and other corneal dystrophies, detecting changes that begin long before symptoms appear. It is also used to monitor progression over time.

🎯

Custom Lens Design

Topographic data is used directly to design and order lenses that conform to the precise shape of your cornea, rather than relying on standard fitting sets or averaged measurements.

πŸ“Š

Ongoing Progress Monitoring

For progressive conditions like keratoconus, regular topography appointments allow us to track changes over time and adjust your lens design as your cornea evolves.

Lens Options

GP Lenses vs Scleral Lenses

Both lens types are custom-designed and offer superior optics over soft lenses for complex prescriptions. The right choice depends on your corneal shape, condition, and lifestyle needs.

Option 01

Gas Permeable (RGP) Lenses

Rigid gas permeable lenses are smaller-diameter hard lenses that sit directly on the cornea. They provide excellent optical clarity and durability, and are particularly effective for moderate keratoconus and high astigmatism.

  • Smaller diameter, sits on the cornea
  • Highly oxygen-permeable material
  • Excellent optics for moderate irregularity
  • Durable and long-lasting
  • Initial adaptation period required
  • Suitable for keratoconus, high myopia, and astigmatism

Option 02

Scleral Lenses

Scleral lenses are larger-diameter lenses that vault completely over the cornea and rest on the white of the eye (sclera). This design provides exceptional comfort and stability, and is ideal for advanced keratoconus, post-surgical corneas, and severe corneal irregularity.

  • Large diameter, vaults over the cornea entirely
  • Fluid reservoir between lens and cornea
  • Outstanding comfort, even for dry eye patients
  • Exceptional stability and visual consistency
  • Ideal for advanced keratoconus and post-transplant
  • Best option when RGP lenses cannot be tolerated

The Process

How Specialised Lens Fitting Works

Fitting a custom hard or scleral lens is a multi-step process that requires precision, patience, and specialist expertise. We guide you through each stage.

01

Initial Assessment

We review your vision history, current prescription, and ocular health. A comprehensive assessment determines whether specialised lenses are appropriate and which type is most likely to succeed for your specific condition.

02

Corneal Topography

Using the Medmont Corneal Topographer, we create a precise three-dimensional map of your corneal surface. This data drives the custom lens design and is the single most important step in achieving an accurate fit.

03

Trial Lens Fitting

Trial lenses are applied and assessed using a slit lamp and fluorescein dye, which reveals exactly how the lens sits on the eye. Adjustments to the lens parameters are made until the fit and vision are optimised.

04

Custom Order and Delivery

Once the optimal parameters are confirmed, your lenses are custom-manufactured to order. On collection, we ensure you are comfortable inserting, removing, and caring for your lenses before you leave.

Mina Abbatemarco contact lens specialist at Dynamic Vision East Rand Mall

"Many patients come to us having been told that nothing more can be done for their vision. In most cases, that simply is not true. A well-fitted scleral or gas permeable lens can change a patient's life, and that never gets old."

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your specialised contact lens assessment.

In most cases, yes. Scleral and gas permeable lenses are considered the most effective optical correction for keratoconus, particularly as the condition progresses beyond what spectacles or soft lenses can correct. They work by creating a smooth, even refracting surface over the irregular cornea, restoring clarity that standard lenses cannot achieve. We will assess the stage and pattern of your keratoconus and recommend the most appropriate lens type for your current situation.
RGP lenses do require an adaptation period, typically two to four weeks, during which your eyes adjust to the sensation of the lens on the cornea. Most patients tolerate them well once adapted. Scleral lenses, by contrast, are often described as more comfortable than RGP lenses because they vault over the cornea entirely and rest on the less sensitive scleral tissue. Many patients with dry eye or corneal sensitivity actually prefer scleral lenses for this reason.
The initial assessment and topography appointment typically takes 60 to 90 minutes. A trial lens fitting appointment follows and may take a similar amount of time, as we work through lens parameters carefully to achieve the best fit and vision. Additional follow-up visits are common for complex cases. Once your custom lenses are ordered and delivered, a final collection and training appointment ensures you are confident wearing and caring for your lenses.
Many medical aid schemes provide benefits for contact lens fittings and corneal topography, particularly when there is a clinical indication such as keratoconus. The extent of cover depends on your specific plan. We recommend checking with your scheme before your appointment. Our reception team can assist with providing the correct procedure codes for your claim.
Post-surgical irregular corneas are one of the most common reasons patients are referred to us for specialised contact lenses. After procedures such as LASIK, PRK, or a corneal transplant, the corneal surface may be irregular enough that glasses cannot provide adequate correction. Scleral lenses in particular are highly effective in these cases, creating a smooth optical surface independent of the underlying corneal shape. A corneal topography assessment will clarify whether you are a suitable candidate.
Both lens types require daily cleaning with appropriate RGP or scleral lens solutions. Scleral lenses must be filled with sterile saline before insertion and thoroughly cleaned and stored in lens solution overnight. Cleaning, insertion, and removal technique are covered in detail at your collection appointment. Most patients find the routine straightforward within the first week of wear. We provide written instructions and are always available to answer questions as you adapt.
