Binocular Vision Standard
Drivers must achieve a minimum visual acuity of 6/12 or better when both eyes are used together, with or without corrective lenses. This is equivalent to reading the 6/12 line on a standard Snellen chart.

"Safe driving depends on more than skill β clear, unimpaired vision is a legal requirement for every road user."
Vision Screening
South African law requires all driver's licence applicants and renewals to undergo a vision screening by a registered optometrist. The test confirms that your eyesight meets the minimum visual standards required to drive safely on public roads, as specified under the National Road Traffic Act.
At Dynamic Vision East Rand Mall, our optometrists conduct thorough, efficient driver's licence vision screenings and issue the required certificate on the same visit. The process is straightforward and typically takes under 20 minutes, with no need to book a full eye test appointment.
All driver's licence screenings are charged at medical aid rates. If you are already due for your annual eye test, we can combine both on the same visit; simply let us know when you book.
Tip: Bring your current glasses or contact lenses to the screening. If you wear correction while driving, bring it along, as the screening should reflect your actual driving vision.
Book Your ScreeningWhat's Assessed
Our driver's licence vision screening follows the requirements of the National Road Traffic Act and covers all the visual functions relevant to safe driving.
We measure the sharpness of your vision at distance: the ability to read road signs, see pedestrians, and identify hazards at a safe stopping distance. Minimum standards apply with and without optical correction.
Peripheral (side) vision is essential for detecting vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians outside your direct line of sight. The screening confirms your field of view meets legal driving requirements.
We assess how well both eyes work together, including depth perception, which is critical for judging distances and safe following gaps between vehicles.
Once your screening is complete and your vision meets the required standards, our optometrist issues your official vision certificate. You bring this to the traffic department as part of your licence renewal application.
Legal Standards
Vision requirements are set under the National Road Traffic Act. Your optometrist will assess whether your vision meets these standards, with or without corrective lenses.
Drivers must achieve a minimum visual acuity of 6/12 or better when both eyes are used together, with or without corrective lenses. This is equivalent to reading the 6/12 line on a standard Snellen chart.
Drivers with vision in one eye only are subject to different standards. Our optometrists assess monocular patients carefully and advise on legal requirements and any applicable licence restrictions.
If you meet the required standard only with glasses or contact lenses, a condition will be noted on your licence requiring you to wear correction while driving. Driving without your correction in this case is a legal offence.
The Process
Our driver's licence vision screening is fast, straightforward, and handled professionally from start to finish.

Our optometrist will assess your visual acuity, peripheral vision, and binocular vision. The screening typically takes 15β20 minutes. Bring your glasses or contact lenses if you wear them.
Once the screening is complete, your vision certificate is issued on the spot. Take it directly to the traffic department as part of your licence renewal application.
